Using Color Correction Filters

Light plays a critical role in the outcome of your underwater video. Depending on the diving conditions and your depth, water has a natural tendency to filter the color of sunlight. Your basic scuba training taught you that water filters out the color spectrum of light as depth increases. The bright yellows, oranges, and reds are the first colors to be filtered out, gradually giving the underwater environment an overall blue/green cast with increasing depth.

Compensating for this color loss is an important consideration when shooting video with natural sunlight if you want your video to appear rich and colorful. To compensate for loss of color you need to either shoot your video with a special color correction filter mounted in front of the camcorder lens, or use artificial lights. Otherwise, the full color spectrum will not be possible and your subjects will appear with an overall blue or green monochromatic cast depending on the depth and diving conditions.

Color correction filters are useful for enhancing natural colors when shooting without video lights, and are effective between the 20 to 60 foot depth range. Above a depth of 20 feet you won't require a filter; below a depth of 60 feet you'll likely want to use artificial lights.

Color correction filters are ideal when shooting medium to wide-angle video under natural ambient lighting conditions where the visibility is good and the light penetrates well to depth. In darker diving conditions or on cloudy days, you will get better colors at medium to close distances by using video lights. Color correction filters should not be used when shooting with video lights unless you want a specific visual effect or are using special color correction filters to balance between artificial tungsten light and natural sunlight. In these situations, the special color correction filters are normally mounted on the lights and not in the flip filter holder.

Color correction filters should also be used in conjunction with your camera's white balance feature and are useful when your camcorder is not equipped with a manual white balance setting.

While it is possible to perform color correction adjustments on video when editing with a software application in post-production, it is much easier and less time consuming if you consider color correction and white balance when shooting.

Amphibico video housings are equipped with a red color correction filter mounted internally that can be easily flipped into position in front of the video camera lens when required. Because the filter is mounted inside the housing in a frame immediately in front of the camcorder lens, you won't need to worry about such problems as vignetting or the possibility of bubbles being trapped between the filter and lens port, which sometimes occurs with housings where an external color correction filter is employed. A red colored filter is supplied as standard equipment and is useful for diving under blue ocean conditions. Other color correction filters, for example a magenta colored filter, can be purchased and mounted into the flip filter frame for use in green water conditions that you would encounter when diving in fresh water.

Remember to check the position of your flip filter in the following situations:

Ensure the flip filter is not in position whenever you shoot video with your housing at the surface or in very shallow water - for example, when shooting divers entering the water off the stern of the dive boat. Otherwise, your footage will appear with a noticeable red/orange color cast unless you first perform a white balance.
Ensure the flip filter is in position anytime you shoot video below 20 feet without video lights, or your footage will have an overall blue/green color cast that increases with depth.
Ensure the flip filter is not in position whenever you dive below 20 feet and are using artificial lights as your primary light source for shooting - otherwise your footage will appear with a red/orange color cast.
Ensure the flip filter is either fully in or out of position depending on the above situations. If not, the edge of the filter frame will appear in the path of the camera lens and ruin your footage. The filter frame should be noticeable in the camcorder's viewfinder or in the external monitor when this occurs, but you should double check its position just the same by simply looking into the housing through the front dome port.

When using the white balance feature, you should always perform an initial manual white balance operation whenever the filter is flipped in or out of position and thereafter for each shot whenever your depth, light source, or diving conditions change.
